Alan Aldo originally known as Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo was born on January 28, 1936 in Bronx, New York to Robert Aldo and Joan Browne. His father was an actor and a singer and used to perform in Burlesque theaters all around the country.

His mother was a former winner of a beauty pageant and belonged to the Irish ancestry. Alan was seven when contracted polio due to which he had to undergo a painful treatment regimen gathered by Sister Elizabeth Kenny.

Alan went to Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York. He graduated from Fordham University with a B.A Degree in 1956. He had a half-brother named Antony Aaldo who also grew up to become an actor.

For Alan’s junior year, he pursued acting in Rome and studied in Paris, and even performed alongside his father on TV in Amsterdam.

While studying in college, he was a part of ROTC, and after graduating he started to serve at Fort Benning, later he worked for United States Army Reserve on a tour to Korea.

He began with his career in the industry in the 1950s as a participant of the Compass Players Comedy revenue. In the early 1970s, he auditioned for the role of Hawkeye Pierce for the upcoming TV adaptation Show of the 1970 movie MASH.

He got selected for the role and that became the major breakthrough of his acting career, his career shot up with that show.

In fact, he took part in writing over 19 episodes of the show including the 1983 finale episode ‘Goodbye’, ‘Farewell’, and ‘Amen’.

Before his major breakthrough arrived, he had made several film appearances that included his debut character in ‘Gone are the Days’, which was a success and led to more roles for him such as ‘Paper Lion’, and ‘The Extraordinary Seaman’ among others.

Currently, Alan is married to Arlene Weiss now known as Arlene Alda. It was reported that Alan met Arlene at a mutual friend’s dinner party while he studied in Fordham. Their relationship started from there and they got married after he graduated.

The couple has three daughters and eight grandchildren with almost all of their families filled with actors and actresses.

In 2018, it got reported that was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which had been there for three years before he announced on CBS This Morning.

During the shoot of M.A.S.H. Alda and co-stars Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson use to work well together till three seasons, but tensions started to grow after Alan’s role gained more popularity and broke the ‘equal stand’ of the entire cast.

Both Roger and Stevenson left the show after the end of the third season. The producers had to look for a replacement and they landed with Harry Morgan. In 1995, he starred as the President of the United States in the political satire movie ‘Canadian Bacon’.
