Amy Meredith Poehler was born on September 16, 1971, in Newton, Massachusetts. Her parents, Eileen and William Poehler were school teachers. She has a younger brother named Greg. Poehler’s parents raised their children as Catholics.

In 1991, Chicago based sketch and improv group, the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), had been created. After Adam McKay left the group in 1995, Amy Poehler became his replacement.

Although the membership of the group was not static, in 1996, a core group of four members, with Poehler, Besser, Roberts, and Matt Walsh, was formed. The group moved to New York City and began performing regionally. The USB four began teaching improv classes to earn extra money.

The USB’s eponymous half-hour sketch comedy series debuted on Comedy Central in 1998. The series lasted for three seasons until Comedy Central dropped it.

The group founded an improv theatre/training center in New York City while working on the series.
