Angela Evelyn Bassett was born in New York City on August 16, 1958.  Bassett, who was brought up in Harlem, was soon separated from her parents when her mother fell pregnant again ten months after her birth. She then stayed with her aunt for several years. She was moved again when her parents split, this time to St. Petersburg, Florida, where she was fostered beside her sister by a social worker.

Angela’s mother grew insistent that she enroll after a few years and became far more active in her life. She pushed that both of her daughters achieve decent marks in order to attend university.
