Arthur Steven Lange, Jr., aka Artie Lange, was born on October 11, 1967, in Livingston, New Jersey. His mother, Judy Caprio, was a housewife, while Arthur Lange Sr., his father, was a general contractor who installed television antennas.

Lange played in the school baseball team became an all-county third baseman. He had to attend summer school to graduate, since his poor grades.

Prison time for Flirting

When he was 18-years-old, Lange was arrested for attempted bank robbery. Artie claimed that he was just trying to “flirt” with the teller by passing her a note that said he was armed and demanded $50,000. However, the teller took it seriously and called the police.

Artie had to pay $500 as court fees, and 25 hours of Community service for this disorderly conduct. As part of his probation, Lange attended the Connecticut School of Broadcasting

Family Troubles

In 1985 Lange joined Seton Hall University, using a connection his uncle had with an employee of the admissions department. Although he received appreciation for his stand-up comedies in between the presentations, Artie felt bored, soon after.

His father fell off a ladder while installing an antenna and broke his back, becoming a quadriplegic. To help his family, Artie used to install antennas himself, in his spare time. His mother took care of Lange Sr. at night, while working all morning as a secretary.

Later, the Lange family contacted celebrities asking them to donate items for auction. Howard Stern sent a signed jacket, and he was the only celebrity to respond to the family.

Attaining the Dreams Through Hard Ways

Although he performed at the age of 19, Lange did not perform for another 4 years. In the meantime, he worked as a Longshoreman at Port Newark. He made good money out of it.

Arthur quit his job as a Longshoreman at to focus on Comedy. He would do a job as a taxi driver in New York City to pay his bills; And would perform at the clubs.
