Born on the 13th of October, 1980, Ashanti was raised in New York. Her parents are both musicians and are African Americans.

Tina Douglas and Ken Keide Thomas Douglas, her parents, named her Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas after the Ashanti Empire from Ghana. They hoped that their daughter would grow up to become a powerful leader. 

Ashanti’s knack for singing was observed by her mother when she started singing at the age of 12. Throughout her school life, Ashanti wrote several songs and took part in music performances.

Moreover, she worked as a child artist in a few movies aside from singing. However, her big break was yet to arrive.
