Early Life

Born on 30th November 1962, Vincent Edward “Bo” Jackson grew up in Bessemer, Alabama. Among his many siblings, Jackson is the 8th child in the family of 10 children.

For high school, Bo attended the Mc Adory High School. There, he broke the records being a running back of the football team. Surprising enough, he also excelled as a member of the school’s baseball team – he used to hit twenty home runs in twenty-five.

He did not stop there. He broke the state track records and bagged the state title of Alabama decathlon twice.

Despite being selected by the New York Yankees back in 1982, Jackson thought of a better alternative. He selected to attend Auburn University, that too with a football scholarship. How athletic!

Jackson promised his mother that he would be the first one in his family to attend college. Wondering if he kept his words? Not only did he keep his words but he also excelled in all the sports he played.

While studying at Auburn, Jason ran track and played baseball. He was popular for his unique ability to surpass in all the sports – his statistics were impressive.

Baseball Career

Following college, Jackson has been on track to play football. He even got selected by the popular Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To everyone’s surprise, Jackson turned the deal down. It was for a ploy set by them to stop Jackson from playing baseball.

Instead, Jackson opted to play for the Kansas City Royals and move ahead in the professional baseball journey in 1986. The deal was for 3 years at $1.07 million worth.

Jackson played around 53 matches as the Memphis Chicks, their Class AA minor league affiliate.

He reached higher in 2 years – got called up to the major ones in 1986 and in 1987, reached the Royals’ roster.

Due to his injury, the Royals had to let go of Bo Jackson in 1991. This brought a golden opportunity for the Chicago White Sox.

They offered bigger bucks – $700,000 every season on a 3-year contract. Not only this, it has a performance-based boost of $8.15 million.

As a member of the White Sox, Jackson passed 2 seasons in 1991 and 1993. Due to his hip replacement surgery, he had to take 1992 off as he was placed on the disabled list. His professional atheletic career ended in the California Angels in 1994. At 32 years of age, the baseballer retired.

Football Career

Jackson was offered to play as a part of the Los Angeles Raiders in that 1987 NFL Draft. Though initially disinterested, Jason later agreed to play when he learned that Al Davis, the owner of Raiders, will permit him to play both sports simultaneously.

Immediately, Jackson sealed the deal. It was a 5-yar contract worth $7.4 million that would allow him to finish every MLB season in direct reporting to Raiders. If that included him missing NFL games, so be it.

Moreover, Bo was offered the greatest pay of any non-quarterback footballer in the history of the NFL. To add to it, there was a signing bonus of $500,000.

As a member of the NFL, Jackson played 4 seasons. In his entire football career, he suffered from a dislocated hip after a tackle. This injury caused his retirement from the Royals.

Both his baseball and football career combined, Jackson earned a total salary of around $20 million.

Most of his net worth came from his endorsements, most importantly the millions of dollars that came from Gatorade and Nike.

His relationship with Nike is worth mentioning. His series of commercial advertisements “Bo Knows” garnered Nike much popularity, generating around 40 million dollars every year.

Additionally, Nike offered to pay Bo $100,000 every year if he only played baseball. And for the NFL, they offered an extra 1 million dollars.

Nike never ceased paying Bo. At least $1 million goes to Bo’s account from Nike till now.

Highlights and Achievements

Throughout his career, Jackson received many awards. The greatest among them was the Heisman Trophy in 1985. This is given to the best athlete of the year.

Cotton Bowl MVP, Pro Bowl maker, all-star athlete – Jackson’s list of achievements is never-ending.

Do not forget that he is also a successful businessperson. He invested in a food company, a commercial bank, and has his own Sports Complex.

His multi-sports facility is situated in Illinois
