Yvette Marie Stevens aka Chaka Khan was born on March 23, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois. She is the eldest of the five children of Sandra Coleman and Charles Stevens. Her mother had a job at the National Opinion Center at the University of Chicago, while her father was working as a freelance photographer.

Her sister Yvonne aka Taka Boom was also a successful musician. Khan’s only brother, Mark, formed the funk group— Aurra and the Jamaica Boys, was a successful musician as well.

Khan’s main inspiration to music was her grandmother. She formed a girl group at the age of eleven, Crystalettes, in which her sister, Taka, was a member.
