Chevy Chase’s full name is Cornelius Crane “Chevy” Chase. His grandmother gave him the nickname “Chevy”. This was derived from the medieval English ballad “The Ballad of Chevy Chase”. He was born on October 8, 1943, in Lower Manhattan of New York City.

His father, Edward Tinsley “Ned” Chase was a Princeton educated Manhattan book editor and magazine writer, and mother Cathalene Parker was a concert pianist and librettist. Chase is a descendant of Scottish Clan Douglas.

Being a 14th generation New Yorker his name was registered in the Social Register at a very young age. Although Chase had a long list of famous ancestors he did not like to define himself in terms of his ancestors.
