Daniel Peter Masterson was born on March 13, 1976, in the densely populated Long Island, south-east of New York. Majority of his childhood was spent there and in East Williston.

He was born to Peter and Carol Masterson. His father was an insurance agent and his mother was a manager.

Actor Christopher Masterson is his brother. Jordan and Alanna Masterson, who are also actors, are maternal half-siblings to Danny and Chris. Will Masterson is a paternal half-sibling.

Daniel Masterson went to Garden City High school. He had been in the film industry as a child actor from the tender age of 4. Danny dropped out in 10th grade and opted for a tutor because of his workload.
