Early Life

Darius’ father was in a traveling gospel band and was rarely around, and Darius only got to see him before church on Sundays.

Darius had a typical southern African-American upbringing. He grew up poor and would go to church every Sunday.

He recalls that at one point that he, his two sisters, mother, grandmother, and 14 other children were living in a three-bedroom house. In spite of this, he looks back on his childhood fondly.

Career

Darius Rucker’s musical career began in 1986 in university when friend Mark Bryan heard him singing in the shower.

The two formed a duo and sang R.E.M cover songs at local venues and later integrated Dean Felber and Jim Sonefeld in 1989 to form Hootie & the Blowfish.

The band went on to be a commercial and critical success with multiple chart-topping records and albums.

In 2001 Darius released an RnB album titled Back to Then. It saw little success – despite this, Rucker admits that he had a lot of fun making the album and cited Notorious B.I.G and Lauryn Hill as inspirations behind it.

In 2008, just as Hootie & the Blowfish went on hiatus Darius signed with Capitol Nashville and released his country debut album “Learn to Live” to great critical and commercial acclaim. Following its release, the first track “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”, the second track, “It Won’t Be Like This for Long’ and the third track “Alright” went on to consecutively top the country charts.

Darius’ second album was “Charleston, SC 1966”, the name being inspired by Radney Foster’s debut album “Del Rio, TX 1959”. This was a commercial success and, like his previous album, contained several hits.

The songs “Come Back Song” and “This” hit the number one spot on the Country charts, with the album also hitting the number one spot on the Country charts.

In late 2011 it was reported that Darius was working on a third album. Titled “True Believers,” it was released in 2013 and saw itself peak at number one on the Country charts with hit cover song, “Wagon Wheel” winning him a Grammy for Best Solo Country Performance.

Darius Rucker’s subsequent album, “Southern Style” came in 2015 to critical acclaim at the number one spot on the Country charts once more. Rucker’s most recent album, “When Was the Last Time” was released in 2017.

During this time, he announced a tour with his band Hootie & the Blowfish and went on a country-wide tour that ended in Columbia, South Carolina. The release of their latest album, “Imperfect Circle” followed in late 2019.

Highlights and Achievements

Darius Rucker supports charities through benefit concerts to help sick and underprivileged kids, does volunteer work, the PGA First Tee Program, and the Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation, which has worked to provide over $4.5 million in funding to public education systems in South Carolina.
