Early Life

Richard Wayne Van Dyke, aka Dick Van Dyke’s, was born in West Plain city of Missouri on 13th December of the year 1925. His mother’s name was Hazel Victoria, and his father’s name was Loren Wayne Van Dyke.

Hazel was a Stenographer, and Loren was a salesman. His younger brother Jerry Van Dyke was also an actor. They both grew up in the Danville city of Illinois. 

Van Dyke had a long-cherished dream of joining the Air Forces as a pilot in WWII. He applied multiple times but was denied from being enlisted due to underweight.

Eventually, he served as a radio announcer and joined the Special Service as an entertainer of the troops. 


In the year 1940, Van Dyke started working as a radio Disc Jockey in West Plain city. He and Phil Erickson used to be a comedy pair and traveled together to the West Coast. They also performed in a local TV show, The Merry Mutes in Georgia. 

He also appeared in the Television show The Polly Bergen Show on NBC, Chances of a Lifetime (1954), The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom on ABC and The Phil Silvers Show. 

His debut was in 1959, in The Girls Against the Boys. Later in 1960, he starred in Bye Bye Birdie (1960-1961), which led him to win a Tony Award. 

At the starting of 1961, Van Dyke played the role of a comedy writer Rob Petrie in a CBS sitcom of his own. This show brought him 3 Emmy Awards.

The series was such a hit that it earned 4 Emmy Awards in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. Apart from Van Dyke, the other casts were prominent, i.e., Rose Marie, Jerry Paris, Mary Tyler Moore, Ann Morgan Guilbert, and Morey Amsterdam. 

In 1971, Van Dyke began a new comedy project, The New Dick Van Dyke Show. Although it ran for 4 years and won a Golden Globe nomination, it was less successful considering the previous project’s success.

His 3rd show Van Dyke and Company, ran for only 3 months but won an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Comedy- Variety Series category. 

He has also published 5 books which are: “Altar Egos” in 1967, “Faith, Hope and Hilarity” in 1970, “Those Funny Kids” in 1975, “My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business” in 2011, “Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging” in 2015.

Furthermore, he earned a Lifetime Achievement Award in Comedy in American Comedy Awards. He also achieved the Lifetime Achievement Awards in Screentime Guild Awards.

His show Bye Bye Birdie won the Tony Awards. Besides, He was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Actor.

Willett was a very private person and lived her life far from the spotlight. In 1976, when Van Dyke confessed to Willett that he was cheating on her, they separated. After eight years of separation, they divorced each other in 1984.

Van Dyke and actress Michelle Triola Marvin remained together for 30 years. Unfortunately, Michelle passed away in 2009. 

In 2012, Van Dyke and Arlene Silver, a makeup artist, tied their knot together. They are still leading a successful and happy married life even after having a considerable age gap.

Although the movie Mary Poppins happened to be a classic movie yet Dyke’s accent was very disgusting. According to some people, his attempt at a cockney accent as character Bert is the worst-ever accent in any film. In 1960, most of his films were a flop. 

In Van Dyke’s book “Keep Moving,” he confessed about many things, including alcohol addiction and cheating on his first wife, Willett. He also said that he was deeply moved by Willett’s death in 2008. 

Van Dyke had issues with alcohol. His addiction to alcohol reached such an immense stage that he had to receive treatment in 1972. He confessed his cheating and association with consuming alcohol in his book “Keep Moving.”
