Early Life
Donald Jay Rickles was born on May 8, 1926, in Queens, New York. He was the only son of Max Rickles and Etta Rickles.
He attended the Newton High School in Elmhurst, Long Island. At ag 18, Rickles was enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Philippines during the Second World War.
After being discharged in1946 he joined the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was graduated in 1948 with a degree.
Don was frustrated as there weren’t many acting jobs available for him. So he started to do comedies and impressions at bingo parlors and church.
In 1953, Rickles moved to Los Angeles and concentrated on his comedy career. He began acting in small films along with doing stand-up.
First, he would do programs with scripted comedies but soon realized that the people laughed at his impromptu jokes rather than the scripted ones. Rickles rose to fame for being an Insult Comedian.
Encouraged and Promoted by Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra once visited a nightclub at Miami beach while Rickleswas performing there. Rickles mocked and insulted him in a way that although Sinatra found the remarks insulting, he found it hilarious too.
