Early Life
Eddie’s real name was Edgar A. Cano, which was later changed to Edgar A. Bravo. He changed the surname according to his stepfather’s name. He was born on 15 May 1970 in California, the United States to Mexican parents.
Bravo was interested in music from his childhood and he learned how to play guitar and drums. He dreamt of becoming a musician one day and with that aim he had formed many bands.
Bravo took interest in athletics as well and participated in a wrestling team in high school and also used to play American Football.
Career
Bravo wanted to pursue a career in music for which he shifted to Hollywood in 1991 and formed a band there. The name of the band was “Blackened Kill Symphony”. He thought himself to be an unattractive person and decided to take karate classes.
Bravo was influenced by a Brazilian martial artist named Royce Gracie after he won the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1994.
He then made up his mind to practice and master the Brazilian martial art, Jiu-Jitsu. His master was Jean Jacques Machado and in 1996 he attended the Jeet Kune Do academy for martial arts.
Bravo’s main focus was to become proficient in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu form. By 1998 he achieved a blue belt and came up with his ways of defeated opponents with a submission hold called Twister.
He received a purple belt in 1999 and created a method of guarding opponents named the rubber guard.
In 2003 after he received a brown belt, he took part Submission Wrestling World Championship in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club.
There he defeated a black belt receiver named Gustavo Dantas by a hold known as rear-naked choke, which was considered to be a major defeat.
In the quarter-finals, Bravo competed against Royler Gracie, who was a world champion four times and an ADCC champion three times.
He was doing well fighting against Gracie using his rubber guard technique and in the end, won the quarter-finals using the Triangle Choke technique.
Bravo could not make it to the finals after losing against Leo Vieira in the semi-finals.
After the competition when he moved back to the United States, his master Jean Jacques Machado presented him with a black belt.
Bravo then opened a school in California and named it “10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu School”. Bravo retired in 2014 from competitions and decided to have another contest with Royler Gracie.
