Early Life

Geddy Lee was born on July 29, 1953, in Ontario, Canada. His birth name was Gary Lee Weinrib. His parents Morris and Mary Weinrib were refugees in Canada. Morris Weinrib was a skilled musician, but he died early.

Since then, Gary Lee’s mother brought him up alone. Gary changed his name to Geddy because of his mother’s thick pronunciation.

He was passionate about music since childhood. And after his father’s death, he started working on music to help his mother.

Lee wanted to focus more on his musical career so he dropped out of high school. But he worked hard not to be a disappointment to his widowed mother.

Besides music, Geddy Lee loves to write. He says, “It is my first love.” And “It is difficult for me to practice without writing-up something.”

Geddy Lee began playing music at his school when he was only around 10-year-old. He learned to play guitar when he was 14. And later he learned to play the piano.

But what enticed him the most was the rock music. This marked the beginning of his career as a rap singer.

Lee joined a rock band in September 1968 at the request of his childhood friend Alex Lifeson. Later this band became today’s ‘Rush.’

Neil Peart was another member of ‘Rush’. In 1969 they started working as professional performers in coffeehouses, recreational events as well as high school programs.

Later, they started creating their own original songs and performed them at the clubs and bars. The band got public recognition, and they started performing at concerts by 1972.

The band released its first debut album titled Rush in 1974. Later, in 1975, they released two back-to-back albums named ‘Fly by Night’ and ‘Caress of Steel’.

Their fifth album titled ‘A Farewell to Kings’ got released in 1977. Later that year, they released another album titled ‘Hemispheres.’ Both of these albums became huge hits.

‘Rush’ released 7 more albums from 1980 to 1990.

Despite being the main vocalist of ‘Rush’ as well as composing, arranging songs for the band, Lee worked with other music bands too. In 1982, he worked as a music producer with the band ‘Boys Brigade’.

Later, he continued working as a producer for many other bands. Plus, he produced music for the band ‘Rocket Science’ too.

In 2002, Lee released his solo debut album titled ‘My Favorite Headache’.

The band released their last album in 2012. They named it ‘Clockwork Angels’. In 2016, Rush got disbanded owing to the deteriorating health of drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.

Rush has released numerous albums, music videos, and singles during the long journey of 41 years. And there’s no need to mention separately that Geddy Lee has been an essential part of this amazing journey.

Highlight and Achievements

Geddy Lee had received the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee Medal, in 2012.

The following year in 2013, he became an honorable member of the famous ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ along with his other two band-mates.

Besides, he became one of the members of the Juno Hall of Fame in 1994 and an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996.

Age, Height, and Weight

Geddy Lee is 67-years old as of now. His height is around 5ft 10inch. He weighs around 80kgs.

Personal Life

Geddy Lee married Nancy Young in 1976. They share two children named Julian and Kyla.

Lee and Nancy have been married for more than 39 years and they are still going strong. Though a rumor of Lee dating Connie Hamzy aroused in 1991, it died down with time. It did not even affect their marriage.

Lee is known to be a collector of wine since he is fond of it. He has around 5000 bottles of wine in his collection.

‘Rush’ is apparently the third most famous rock band of all time, followed by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Yet, Geddy Lee, as a member of the band, has faced a few controversies.

Rush is basically popular as a rock band. But many critics have lambasted their music stating that whatever the band produces is not authentic.

Critics consider African-American music, especially blues as authentic rock music and they think that Rush lacks in this aspect.

Another controversy arose when Rush released the song ‘2112.’ Some of its lyrics were allegedly controversial as it called Ayn Rand a genius, though she is one of the notorious figures.

Geddy Lee along with the band ‘Rush’ received some backlash back then because of those lyrics in that song.
