Early Life
Joseph Fidler Walsh was born on November 20, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas. His mother was a classically trained pianist and was a huge influence on Joe from an early age.
His father died in a plane crash. Joe was adopted by his step-father at the age of five and since then had the last name Walsh with him. He took Fidler, his biological father’s last name, as his middle name.
Walsh’s family moved to a lot of places while Joe was a child. He attended Montclair High School and used to play oboe and clarinet in the school band. Later he played bass in local bands, the G-Clefs, and the Nomads.
He attended Kent State University after graduating high school and spent time playing guitar for various bands, including Measels from 1965-69. Joe then joined the Cleveland-based hard rock trio the James Gang, appearing on their debut LP Yer’ Album.

After James Gang guitarist Glenn Schwartz left the group, Walsh auditioned and became the replacement of him in the gang. A lot of changes happened in the band later, the members started to fall off because of many reasons.
In 1968, when the Gang was about to play at the Grande Ballroom opening for Cream, Ronnie Silverman informed them that he cannot perform.
To save their faces and the money, the remaining trio performed for the concert; The James Gang then became a trio group, since they liked the sound of all of them together.
After signing with manager Mark Barger, he introduced them to ABC Records staff producer Bill Szymczyk. Bill helped them signed with the ABC’s new subsidiary, Bluesway Records. The band released their debut album Yer’ Album in 1969.

Barnstorm
Although Joe got an offer from England to join Humble Pie after he left James Gang, Walsh moved to Colorado and formed his band Brainstorm in 1971. The Eponymous Barnstorm was released in 1972. Though the album was a critical success, it did not do well with the commercial aspect.
“The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get” became Brainstorm’s first commercially successful album. It peaked at no. 6 on the US Billboard Chart.
The Eagles
Walsh joined the Eagles in 1975 as a replacement of the founding member Bernie Leadon. Though the rest of the band members believed in his talent, they weren’t sure about Walsh’s “wild” approach to music.
Walsh did music with them during all these problems. But it was the hard rock Life in the Fast Lane, which was based on a riff by Walsh that made him acceptable to the band. The song reached no. 11 on the charts.
