Keith Sweat’s full name is Keith Douglas Sweat. He was born on 22 July, 1961, in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. His nationality is American and his ethnicity is Afro-American. He was the son of Charles Sweat and Juanita Thompson.

His father worked in a factory and passed away in 1973. His mother was a hairdresser, and after his father’s death, she raised five kids on her own.

He was brought up in his hometown Harlem alongside his siblings. When he was only 14, he performed at numerous nightclubs in New York City. He graduated with a BS degree in “Communications” from the City College of New York.

Then he started working as a stock boy at Macy’s Department Store during the evening shifts. After that, he became a mailroom clerk in a brokerage firm and in just 4 years managed to successfully become a brokerage assistant.

Moreover, he got to work as a supervisor for the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Career

Keith Sweat’s career started in 1975 with him being a member of the Jamillah band in Harlem. Through his performance in this group, he enhanced his singing skills. He performed in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Keith wound up going solo after a decade and began performing in and around New York City nightclubs. Soon after that, he got the chance to sing for an independent label named Stadium Records.

In 1987, Vincent Davis offered him a contract with “Vintertainment Records” by being impressed with him. This label was well-known for dealing with hip-hop at the earlier time.
