Early Life

On October 30, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York, Nia Talita Long was born. Her ancestors were Afro-Trinidadians. Talita Long, her mother, was a printmaker and teacher, and Doughtry Long, her father, was a poet and high school teacher. Long has got an elder half-sister named Sommore, who is a comedian as well as an actress. 

Long’s parents split when she was only two years old. She then moved to Iowa with her mother before settling in South Los Angeles. In Trenton of New Jersey, was her father’s hometown.

She attended an all-girls Roman Catholic high school named St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, California, and then graduated from Westchester High School in Los Angeles in 1989.


Betty Bridges, Nia Long’s acting mentor, and Todd Bridges’ mother trained her to act. Long’s first official acting part was with Sean Astin, Brian Keith, and Tim Thomerson in a Disney television film called “The B.R.A.T. Patrol” in 1986.

Following this, from 1991 until 1994, she had a contract for three years as Kathryn Kat Speakes on the iconic long-running drama “Guiding Light.” This was the first significant role of hers and it helped her earn further recognition. 

In 1991, Long got the part of Brandi in the movie “Boyz n the Hood” on her first year on “Guiding Light.” She developed confidence in her ability to advance in the film industry after starring in this movie.
