Early Life
Philip James Franchini Jr., aka DeFranco, was born on December 1, 1985, in Bronx, New York. He is of Italian descent. Although his life looks better now, he had a very rough childhood.
Because of his parents’ divorce, Philip had to constantly move to love with his both parents. He has a younger sister named Sabrina.
Both Philip and his father suffered from Polycystic Kidney Disease. Even when he was doing the graduation program, Franchini Jr. had to face many struggles.
He changed many schools during this time before he dropped out of pursuing graduation. He used to work in cafés and restaurants, including McDonald’s, to earn money.
Around this, Philip decided to change his last name Franchini to DeFranco, to make it easier for Americans to pronounce his name. At a point, he had to live in a car due to money problems.
He then agreed to move back in with his father on a condition that he would go back to college, which he didn’t eventually.
Early Career
DeFranco began uploading videos on the then-budding video streaming website, YouTube, in 2006 while he was still in college. Although his first videos are later removed, it is reported that they were all in black and white format, since that was “in trend” back then.
Although he struggled with ideas at first, Philip ended up making The Philip DeFranco Show, where he would share his intake on everything happening around the world.
This was a time when most people were afraid to talk about their minds, but DeFranco was never scared. So in a way, Philip DeFranco is the Father of talking freely and confidently on YouTube.
He rose to fame when he uploaded a video entitled ‘big b**bs’ with an appropriate picture to the title as the thumbnail, in 2007. The content, though, was not anything the audience would expect as it consisted of DeFranco talking.
This process of entitling a video with a high prospect of getting views and the use of such thumbnail was an experiment DeFranco did to understand whether or not he would get such a response.
The video ended up getting more than 1.1 million views back in the day. It is safe to say that it is DeFranco himself who can be defined as the inventor of clickbait.
People Funding Channel
Although he rose to fame and all, the YouTube system was different back in the day. Philip wasn’t getting money for his videos like everybody get now.
Though he went broke, DeFranco knew that his life and career should be built around YouTube. He knew his passion was to pursue a career on YouTube.
DeFranco sold all his possessions to make YouTube videos. He asked his viewers to fund his channel since he is going broke. Thankfully, his loyal viewers, who believed in his talent, began to send money to him, to keep him in the business.
By 2008, DeFranco was casted in the HBO webseries ‘Hooking up’.
