Came with Controversy

Brian Imanuel Soewarno wanted to come off to the music industry with a real impact. He thought it would be ‘cool’ to enter with a catchy stage name since he is a Rapper. Brian and his friend browsed through a lot before they choose Rich Chigga.

The name was sure catchy. It has a good rhythm and is an “easy to remember” name as well. Although he used Chigga as an abbreviation for Chinese Ni**a, Brian had good intentions when he chose the name.

He thought maybe using the word in public can change the prejudices on these words. But rather it backlashed on him. Many came to criticize the teenager accusing him of promoting racism in the music industry.

Rich Chigga then did what he could do to solve this problem. At the beginning of 2018, Rich Chigga officially became Rich Brian, thus removing all the controversies from his name.

Not a Role Model

“Apologies, even though he may have achieved a lot, I as a father see the diaspora rapper Rich Brian NOT as a role model for Indonesian youth, seeing that his tweets are mostly dirty, pornographic, rude, and sometimes degrading towards women.”

Twitter

Although many replied to his tweet with angry comments, like stating that Rich Brian is a rapper, not a social science teacher, it was the replying tweet of Brian’s elder sister, which helped him. Sonia Eryka simply replied to the former Ambassador, a screenshot of one of his old tweets.

In the tweet, Ambassador invited Rich Brian to give a speech with him. After this, many government officials came in defense of Brian.

One of them tweeted that he doesn’t know why the former Ambassador would change his opinion about the rapper in a year.

He further stated that a year before, the former Ambassador liked him, and how can it change it so fast? Rich Brian did not come up with a reply but, get on with his profession.
