Criticism
Ted Danson had a great career and an even great personality. So it’snot likely to say there would be any criticism about the actor. His career almost went perfect, if not for his love.
It’s a tradition to roast the celebrities at the Friar’s Club. In 1993, Whoopi Goldberg was the victim to be roasted, until, her friend and love of the time, Ted Danson stepped in.
Ted Danson appeared in blackface and used the word “nigger” and many other racial inappropriate words, in his monologue. Though it started as a roast of Goldberg, it was Danson, who was sweating.
Danson struggled to complete his monologue since he felt the audience being impatient and uncomfortable. Some of the audience left the Club, in between his monologue.
Many African American celebrities were present at the club, who felt embarrassed and uncomfortable at the speech. Then New York Mayor David Dinkins, performers Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Anita Baker, RuPaul and Mr. T, and boxers Michael Spinks and Sugar Ray Leonard were among the celebrities.
A white man in blackface, repeatedly using the word “nigger” was too much to the audience to accept. Although at the end of the roast, Goldberg defended Danson’s speech, the audience couldn’t digest it. Goldberg said:
If people on the dais and in the audience were not aware of what the day was supposed to consist of, they should have checked to see what the tenor of these roasts are, and then made a decision as to whether or not they wanted to participate.
Though it may seem like a mistake from a person, since black-white discrimination is still prevalent in America, Danson has to take this event as a black mark on his perfect resumé.
